Downriver Detroit is one of the coolest areas to watch trains in all of Michigan. Settled by the French, battled over by they, the English, and the Indians, it is a marshy lowland east of all the glacial moraines and beaches that cut through Southeast Michigan.
The principal geographical feature is: Flat.
The Conrail Detroit Line parallels the GTW Shoreline Sub and the GTW River Sub from CP-Mill all the way down to FN Tower in Trenton. This creates a broad, four track right-of-way that used to be a fairly busy stretch of railroad.
It still is, on occasion, and when it is it can be exhilarating.
