In March of 1971, Penn Central's 600 volt P-Motors were living on borrowed time. Within a year, Amtrak would replace them with FL-9's on all intercity runs out of Grand Central Terminal. Like the Hudsons and Niagras to whom these elderly 2+C+C+2 electrics delivered NYC's Great Steel Fleet at Harmon, no P-Motor would be saved from the torch.
Here, looking southward from the dutch door of the one of PC's northbound "Empire Service" intercity trains, we see a P-Motor, apparently de-energized, waiting to return to the yard, with an E-8 behind it.
