Penn Central Empire Service

Penn Central's Empire "Service" trains of the early 1970's didn't compare very favorably with their NYC antecedents. These trains suffered from truncated consists, indifferent maintenance and service, and few or no passenger amenities. But no one could accuse PC's intercity expresses on the Hudson River Line of being slow, or of lacking the one feature essential to the enjoyment of a young railfan: a working dutch door in the vestibule.

Just north of the Garrison Tunnel, a northbound Empire Service train speeds along at 70 mph under the command of E-8A 4038 in March of 1971.
